Why Edakkal Caves are special

  • Not really a cave: Edakkal is a natural cleft in the rock, about 29 m long, roofed by a huge boulder that wedged across it.
  • The carvings: human figures, animals and symbols carved into the rock walls, believed to be several thousand years old and often dated to the Neolithic period, along with later inscriptions.
  • Discovery: Fred Fawcett, a police officer of the Malabar district, came across the carvings in 1890.

The daily visitor limit, and how not to miss out

Entry to Edakkal Caves is capped at 1,920 visitors a day, a limit set by the Archaeology Department to protect the site. On weekends and holidays, tickets often sell out by late morning, and the counter closes once the limit is reached. Aim to reach the ticket counter around 8:15–8:30 AM, especially from October to January.

The climb: what to expect

  • From the parking area, it’s about 1 km uphill on a paved road to the ticket counter. Walk it, or take the shared jeep.
  • Then come 300+ steep stone and steel steps up to the carvings. Allow 45 minutes to an hour at an easy pace.
  • The climb isn’t suitable for anyone with knee or heart problems, and young children will need a hand on the steep parts.
  • Wear good shoes and carry water. The site is plastic-free: single-use plastic bottles need a refundable deposit at the check-post.
