Wayanad in Monsoon: Best Places to Visit & Safety Tips

Kanthanpara Waterfalls in Wayanad

From June to September, the southwest monsoon turns Wayanad into a world of mist, rain and every shade of green. Waterfalls roar, tea and coffee estates glow, and the crowds thin out. A Wayanad monsoon trip can be magical, as long as you plan around the rain. Here are the best places to visit and the safety tips that matter.

Safety first: during heavy rain, follow alerts from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, the district administration and the forest department. Avoid closed or prohibited areas. Tourists are not permitted in the 2024 landslide-affected Mundakkai–Chooralmala area; the rest of Wayanad remains open to visitors.

Waterfalls (with care)

Soochipara, Meenmutty and Kanthanpara are at their most powerful in the monsoon. Some trails close in heavy rain, and currents are dangerous, so view them only from safe, open areas and never enter the water.

Tea and coffee country drives

The plantation roads around Meppadi, Vythiri and Ambalavayal are beautiful in the rain. Drive slowly and avoid stopping on narrow bends.

Indoor and heritage stops

On the wettest days, visit the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum (closed on Mondays) or the old Jain Temple in Sulthan Bathery.

What’s usually closed or limited in the monsoon

  • Peak treks: Chembra, Brahmagiri and other peak treks are usually suspended during heavy monsoon.

  • Never enter rivers, streams or waterfall pools, and keep children away from edges.
  • Stay away from slopes and road cuttings after heavy rain, and never cross flooded roads.
  • Carry rain jackets, umbrellas, a change of clothes and shoes with good grip.
  • Keep your phone charged, and carry some cash in case networks or card machines are down.
  • Leave buffer time in your plan: a slower day is better than a risky one.

Tip from Le Venzia: In the monsoon, plan sightseeing for the morning and keep afternoons slow. A rainy evening with hot tea on the balcony is one of the best parts of a Wayanad monsoon holiday.
