October to February: peak season

This is the best time for sightseeing. Days are pleasant, nights are cool (often around 16–18°C in December and January), and rain is rare after November. It’s the right time for Chembra Peak, the climb to Edakkal Caves and long drives through tea and coffee country.

It’s also the busiest and most expensive period, especially around Christmas, New Year and long weekends, so book your stay early.

March to May: summer

Days warm up to around 30°C, but evenings stay comfortable compared with the plains. It’s a good time for families during the school holidays. Forests get dry in March and April, and forest areas such as Muthanga have closed for short periods in the past because of fire risk, so check before you plan a safari. Summer showers start in April and May.

June to September: monsoon

Wayanad gets most of its rain in these months, and July is the wettest. The district turns deep green, waterfalls are at their best, and stays are quieter and cheaper. Keep these points in mind:

  • Peak treks such as Chembra and Brahmagiri are usually suspended during heavy monsoon, and some waterfall trails may close.
  • Ghat roads, including the Thamarassery ghat, can be slow in heavy rain.
  • Follow district and forest department advisories and avoid closed or prohibited areas. Tourists are not permitted in the 2024 landslide-affected Mundakkai–Chooralmala area; the rest of Wayanad remains open to visitors.
  • Good monsoon picks: Pookode Lake, the Banasura Sagar Dam viewpoints and scenic drives.

Wayanad in August, September and October

  • August: heavy rain continues, roads are wet and views are misty. Great for a slow, cosy stay.
  • September: rain eases toward the end of the month, the landscape is at its greenest and crowds are still low.
  • October: a great shoulder month, green after the monsoon with occasional showers, and more attractions reopening.

  • Wildlife safari (Muthanga, Tholpetty): generally October to May; check for summer closures.
  • Waterfalls (Soochipara, Meenmutty, Kanthanpara): late monsoon to early winter, from September to December.
  • Families with children: October to February, and the April–May school holidays.

Tips for planning your trip

  • Book early for December, January and long weekends.
  • In the monsoon, carry rain gear and keep your plan flexible.
  • Check the opening status of forest areas and treks with the DTPC or the forest department before you go.

Tip from Le Venzia: On rainy monsoon days, keep mornings for nearby sights around Sulthan Bathery and plan longer drives once the rain eases.
